produce some tight finishes. But what really makes Santa Rosa special is not the turf course or the mules or that a Hall of Fame trainer in Jerry Hollendorfer is making the rounds. It is everything that is missing from most days at most racetracks. There is life here, and plenty of it. While many of the fair-goers may not wan- der into the grandstand, there are thou- sands, they are everywhere and are inescap- able. And they have that funky, aging hippy Northern California vibeā€“tie dyed t-shirts and Bernie Sanders campaign buttons. You will find yourself among them because no one doesn't like a corn dog, fresh cut french fries, funnel cakes and an ice cold beer. If you bring your children, and you should, they'll love the games and rides, none of which look like they are going to fall apart in mid- flight and send your child to the emer- gency room. The kids will also love the ani- mals, the baby chicks, the cow-milking exhi- bitions. And what would any fair be without Monster Truck displays and races? For those who enjoy the beauty of flowers, there's a large enclosure that holds the Hall of Flowers exhibits, with dozens of floral displays. Some have horse racing themes. Plan ahead and you might win the contest for the most scrumptious berry pie. Make sure to visit the butterfly exhibition. Listen to any one of the many bands that rove the fairgrounds. But what makes the fair portion of the fair special doesn't end once you step into the racetrack grandstand. People might bet, but many are not here to do so. They are here to enjoy a nice day out.
