"Launching the Carnival with the other ambassadors was great. It was such an exciting day," the diminutive blonde says, taking a sip of her soy piccolo. "It was a huge day and the per- fect way to celebrate the start of another racing season." Wearing a distressed white vin- tage t-shirt, her tousled hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, Winter has an effortless style. It's feminine with a pinch of glam punk, which is unsurprising, considering Brit- ish queen of glam punk Vivienne Westwood is one of her favourite designers. Over the past decade, the effer- vescent Sydney milliner has seen horseracing blossom into one of the country's most popular social events on the sporting calendar, and arguably the most stylish. "I don't think there are many plac- es where fashion and sport collide in such a glamorous way," Winter says. "It has definitely changed since I first started; I love that a lot of the top magazines are now endorsing racing. When I first started they didn't understand racewear, they didn't want to know about it. "It was, you know, not the fash- ionable thing to do, but now they're all on board and it's great. "Vogue Australia has a lot to do at Royal Randwick and having (Vogue editor) Edwina McCann out there on the field, you couldn't get a bet- ter judge sitting by your side so it's really lovely to be in that company and to raise the bar a bit." Department store Myer, which has dominated the racewear mar- ket for more than a decade thanks to its longstanding association with the national Fashions on the Field competition, now generates more than $30 million in fashion sales during the Spring Carnival.
