Raised in southern Poland but
now resident in Normandy, Lupa
can count some of Europe's pre-
mier stud farms among her pa-
trons as a photographer. As can
be seen in the accompanying
portfolio, she strives for her own
chiaroscuro effect – of much the
same kind she absorbed, in her
childhood, from the dramatic
contrasts of Caravaggio; or from
the softer radiance that tends to
fall across the canvases of Ver-
meer.
"My father wanted to be a
painter," she recalls. "But he had
three older brothers who all told
him that was no way to keep a
family. So he studied agricul-
tural economics instead. But he
has always painted when he has
had the time. Also you have to
remember that those were dif-
