Por tola Hotel & Spa Debuts a Clean, Contemporar y New Look B Y C H R I S T I N A - L A U R E N P O L L A C K T o modernize the atmosphere at the Portola Hotel & Spa in downtown Monterey, the property recently underwent a multi-million-dol- lar renovation led by San Francisco-based interior design firm the Puccini Group. As the award-winning, AAA Four Diamond hotel overlooks Monterey Bay and is within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, their firm imagined a "clean, contemporary" design aes- thetic, inspired by aquatic life, the local land- scape, and natural elements. Puccini's Chief Creative Officer Rob Polacek says, "The coastal Monterey landscape, wildlife and local artist community had a tremendous influence on our design and materials palette." Incorporating eco-friendly materials, such as Teak wood, in the custom furnishings, as well as installing energy and water conservation fix- tures, acts in accordance with the hotel's "green" oriented mission to utilize environmen- tally sustainable practices. In addition, abstract artwork and unique accents, like custom light pendants, add to the sophisticated design. The renovation includes the lobby, restaurant, guest rooms and bathrooms, and a new bar. In addition to updating the space, the hotel aims to create a "bright, airy setting," encouraging guests and visitors to relax in style. Janine Chicourrat, general manager of the property, says she's excited that this major ren- ovation will "bring the incredible space to life."
