Highway 1 south of Big Sur is still closed in two spots due to landslide road damage near the towns of Lucia and Gorda (with estimated repairs the end of May). This effectively stranded Nepenthe, Deetjen's, Big Sur Bakery, Sierra Mar and the Restaurant at Ventana on a virtual island. Currently the only way in or out is through the backtracking Nacimiento-Fergusson Road that cuts through the Santa Lucia Mountains to link Big Sur to inland Highway 101 (making a trip from southern Big Sur to Carmel a 3-hour tour). Locals with ID can now cross the Pfeiffer gap on a meandering 30-minute hiking trail that begins at Big Sur Station before dumping out on Highway 1 just south of the bridge. Gafill esti- mates as many as 500 hospitality workers have suffered the consequences living or working on Big Sur Island. Post Ranch and Nepenthe planned to reopen on April 20, but for different clientele. Post Ranch plans to use a helicopter to fly in guests, while Nepenthe will offer a limited menu and modified hours for locals. Devastated Deetjen's took the biggest gut punch, with damage so extensive that it star ted a Go Fund Me page. Big Sur Bakery has held a few "pop-ups" in Carmel, selling its baked goods in an attempt to at least stay connected. Forced to adjust, the Henry Miller Library moved its gallery/book- store to The Barnyard in Carmel, planning a re- opening for May 27. "It's not just an economic disaster for Big Sur," Gafill says. "The impact can be felt every- where because people just bypass all of Central California." Those who want to help have options, includ- ing supporting businesses north of the bridge, or by donating to the Community Foundation Big Sur fund at www.cfmco.org.
