BEST OF THE CARMEL POLICE LOG… Resident reported a squirrel trapped in a chimney and house. Renter requested assistance, and house management started the process of capturing the squirrel. No capture was made at the time of officer's assistance. A trap was set the next day; the squirrel was contained and released. SHORTCUTS CARMEL CONFIDENTIAL Bernardus Lodge Honored with Awards and Celeb Visits T he Librar y of Congress highlighted a documentar y by film- maker Enid Baxter Ryce, a professor at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), as par t of its Veterans Histor y Project event held in March. Ryce's "A Land of War" explores the For t Ord landscape and the base's impact on area residents and the local terrain. The National Galler y of Ar t screened the film in March as well, and shared a collection of related student documen- taries titled "For t Ord: A Sense of Place." The Veterans Histor y Project collects, preser ves and shares first- hand remembrances of America's war veterans from World War I through current conflicts, so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and understand the realities of war. Documentary by CSUMB Professor Explores Fort Ord A merican model and actress Kate Upton and her fiancée, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, stayed at Bernardus Lodge & Spa and made several local stops during a recent Central California film shoot. As par t of a seven-episode video series shared on the Golf Digest website, the couple took a three-day coastal road trip in a BMW M7601. Upton, Verlander and their dog, Harley, explored Highway 1 in Big Sur before crossing the Bixby Bridge and heading to the Monterey Peninsula. While in the area, the pair teed off at Poppy Hills Golf Cour se. They also met with Bernardus Chef Cal Stamenov during dinner at the resor t's Lucia Restaurant & Bar. Bernardus Lodge & Spa earned additional notice in February, winning three Four-Star nods from Forbes Travel Guide. The 73-room lodge, the Spa at Bernardus and Lucia Restaurant & Bar were each recognized, mak- ing Bernardus one of just 23 American proper ties to take three Four-Star honors. Vogue.com showcased several local destinations in a March travel guide built around the HBO series "Big Little Lies." In addition to men- tioning Carmel's Rio Grill and Monterey's Restaurant 1833, where cast and crew members dined as the show was being filmed, the ar ti- cle talks about the old-world charm and classic decor of L'Auberge Carmel and the work of James Beard-nominated chef Justin Cogley at Aubergine restaurant. Carmel Valley Ranch also earned a mention, as did Point Lobos State Natural Reser ve, Garrapata State Beach and the coastal beaches near Carmel and Big Sur. Though the novel that inspired the series is based in Australia, show creator David E.
