Carmel Valley Painter Tr usts her Ar tistic Instincts B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D T he disciplines of art and science don't often coincide in one mind; when they do—as in the case of Carmel Valley painter Patricia Qualls—the results can be inspired and inspirational. A transplanted Tennessean, Qualls has walked a diverse path. She was a stockbroker in Nashville before venturing west where she became a clinical psychologist. "I needed to do something to lighten up a bit…to nurture my creative side," she says. At first, Qualls would rise early in the morn- ing and paint for 20 minutes or so before start- ing her day. "Painting became my spiritual prac- tice; it was like offering prayers," she explains. Soon, it became an hour, then what she calls her "creative obsession." As her patients moved on one by one, she chose not to replace them, eventually becoming what she is today: a full-time painter. Qualls describes her brand of abstract expressionism as "instinctive painting." "I was painting out the things I was feeling: the light, the dark, the hills, the valleys," she explains. The results are sublime. Displayed in her light- filled gallery/studio, the works lay bare the artist's innermost impressions of life around her.
