Pond Hockey Stragglers Out In The Cold In less time than it took to say, "baby, it's cold outside," pond hockey fans snatched up every available spot at the 2013 Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships. Registration for the signature event began on July 16 and the final team spot was secured on Aug. 3. For the eighth consecutive year, Eagle River, Wis., will host the Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships from Feb. 8-10, 2013, on Dollar Lake. The 2013 edition will feature 340 teams competing in 607 games on 28 rinks, all increases from last year's record numbers. The inaugural event in 2006 included 40 teams and 240 players. BYE-BYE BYES designation, The Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association is one of the first four associations to receive the designation as an ADM Model Program. The semifinal bye at the IIHF World Under 20 and Under 18 men's hockey championships is about to be eliminated. Under the format that has been in place since 2003, the top three teams in each preliminary-round pool advanced to the playoffs. The fourth and fifth teams dropped to the relegation round. The second and third seeds in each pool played quarterfinals while the top seed got to skip the quarters and wait for the semifinal. Because the schedule is already set for the World Junior Championship that starts Dec. 26 in Ufa, Russia, the new format won't be applied to that tournament until 2014 in Sweden.
