course two of the foundation stallions stood
within a stone's throw of York so the breed-
ing side of the sport is fully entwined with
this area, and there are now more than 100
racehorse trainers in Yorkshire."
While the history of the Juddmonte Inter-
national S. reaches only as far back as 1972,
it nevertheless has a roll of honour featuring
some of the modern-day greats, even if its
foundation year didn't quite achieve its in-
tended purpose. The 10-furlong contest was
originally devised as an opportunity for the
two outstanding colts Mill Reef and Brigadier
Gerard (GB) to take each other on and settle
a long-raging argument between racing fans
as to which was the better horse.
