Sculptor Steven Whyte Celebrates 10 Year s in Carmel B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D S culptor Steven Whyte has come a long way from his first 10-by-10 foot New Monterey studio. From there, he progressed to 300, 600 and 1,200 square-foot spaces in a Cannery Row building. Eventually, he and his wife Ellen moved to their current location on Dolores in Carmel-by-the-Sea, initially shared with Savage Stephens Galler y. "We were a little nervous at first," Ellen says, "but other ar tists in town said, 'Just get in; you'll do fine.' " The Whytes have done just that. Now cele- brating their 10th anniversary, Steven contends that: "this is the most-visited gallery in Carmel." "People come in just to watch me work," he says. "We don't have a sales staff—it's just Ellen and myself—and we're really soft-sell. People aren't afraid to come in." The couple relates many instances of people returning repeatedly, eventually purchasing one of the sculptor's compelling creations. But make no mistake: this really is a work- ing studio. "I've done 25 life-size sculptures here," Whyte says. He recently opened another, larger studio space in the Barnyard Shopping Village where visitors can watch him work on larger pieces.
