The Hear th Shop: 50 Year s of Warming Homes B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D A s he was working to erect what would become the Macy's store at Monterey's Del Monte Shopping Center, masonry contrac- tor Bill Chappell decided he wanted to be in business for himself. And what better place than the beautiful new mall he was helping to create? He founded The Hearth Shop in 1967. Today the shop, relocated to the Crossroads Shopping Village in Carmel, is run by Chappell's daughter, Vicki Chappell Warner. "I started working at the store while in high school," Warner says, "and bought it from my dad in 1980." In homage to her father, she removed some of the stones from the Del Monte Center store- front and had them set in the new store's façade. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, The Hearth Shop continues the tradition of custom- designed fireplace screens. "When my dad would build a fireplace, the client would ask where to get a screen," Warner says. "I continue that work and spend my days visiting homes, taking measurements and design- ing one-of-a-kind screens for some of the most beautiful homes on the Peninsula." In addition to fireplace accessories and gas fireplace inserts, the warm and cozy (of course) shop offers unique home accents, décor, gifts and accessories. The Hearth Shop is located at 109 Crossroads Blvd., Carmel. For more information, please call 831/375-1252 or visit www.thehearthshop.com.
