L ast fall, as executives from New York clothier J.McLaughlin surveyed potential California store locations, Carmel caught the eye of CEO Mary Ellen Coyne. "Carmel has that charming, small-town feel, but with sophisticated customers," she says. "Our philosophy is to have stores everywhere you would like to be—and Carmel is one of those places." Coyne's team opened the local J.McLaughlin store in April, bringing playful prints to a petite Ocean Avenue space outfitted with natural oak and ocean-hued accents. The brand puts a preppy stamp on classic apparel for women and men, creating polished, dynamic pieces designed for versatility. In conjunction with this year's 40th anniver- sary, J.McLaughlin introduced its popular, ath- leisure-inspired Acadia collection. Cashmere wraps and colorful cardigans also sell well here on the coast, as does apparel made from Catalina Cloth, a signature blend of durable, slightly stretchy knit jersey. "It's a fabric that travels beautifully. It's easy to pack and unpack, or you can wear it on a plane and go straight to dinner," Coyne says. Soon, Carmel's J.McLaughlin crew will announce in-store events that support area nonprofits. "We're a very local and loyal brand," says Coyne, "and we see great possibilities here."
