CycleBar Rocks Your Ride B Y B R E T T W I L B U R I n a dimly lit room packed with 48 high-tech stationary bikes, a group of enthusiastic men and women clip in and start to pedal. An energetic "CycleStar" instructor hops on a bike in the front of the theater-like space, and pumps music while giving directions to the rid- ers, who are now starting to sweat and reach for their water bottles. This is a CycleBar franchise, and owner Heather Sommers has spent the last 2 ½ years preparing the space next to Prim's in Carmel for the ultimate boutique workout experience. Friendly and accommodating, Sommers has outfitted her studio with treats like cherries from her family's Central Valley farm, compli- mentary water bottles and bike shoe rentals, designer workout wear, lockers with USB charg- ing ports, showers and towels. "It's about community, connection, the courage to feel good in class, and health and well being," she says. Instructors offer four types of rides: some focus on metrics, while others are more about enjoying the music and the flow of class. Lighting and music changes to mix up the pacing of the rides, and participants are encour- aged to leave negative energy behind. "I want everyone to have fun," Sommers says, and by the look of those exiting class with happy chatter and a healthy glow, it's working.
