SEPTEMBER 2017 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 17 resources is driving more companies to aim to create products that "last forever," said John Pouland, vice president, government affairs and solutions (lighting), Phillips. It's a phenomenon known as the circular economy, in which companies aim to get the maximum use out of the resources available to them. Part of that involves providing services to go along with the core product. The single-use economy, Pouland said, "won't go away, but it will diminish." ACTING CPSC CHAIR VOWS TRANSPARENCY, COLLABORATION New Consumer Product Safety Commission Acting Chair Ann Marie Buerkle, during her four years as a member of the commission, has often felt that industry is treated unfairly. Buerkle, who became acting chair in February, told AHAM members she wants to change the culture at CPSC into one where the positions of all stakeholders are considered in decisions and new regulations. "I think industry has been maligned," Buerkle told AHAM members. "All the people who make up those companies care deeply about safety. They have built it into their systems. We need to sit down and talk with the stakeholders…primarily the regulated community, and understand how it is you do your business." AHAM supports Buerkle's full confirmation as chair. AWARDS HONOR INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE Five AHAM members were honored for their years of leadership and service in volunteer roles. Paul Sikir, vice president of design engineering, Sub-Zero Group, Inc., received the Home Appliance Industry Leadership (HAIL) Award. He held several leadership roles including AHAM treasurer and first vice chair before rising to chair the AHAM Board of Directors from 2012–2014. He continues to serve on the AHAM executive and finance committees. AHAM presented the 2017 Gordon Stauffer Liston Durden Distinguished Service Award to David Kinny, product safety and reliability leader, cooking products, GE Appliances, a Haier company; Chad Strickland, director of product safety and regulatory compliance, Electrolux North America; and Jim Pelkey, design lab certification manager, Wolf Appliance, Inc. Pelkey has been a key contributor to AHAM's work on cooking product safety and performance. Strickland led the critical task of chairing the CANENA project updating the North American refrigerator and freezer safety standard. Kinny has played an essential role in multiple AHAM cooking safety initiatives and led the development of AHAM's electric cooktop safety proposal. AHAM presented its Emerging Leader Award to Jeff Colyer safety program manager-RF, GE Appliances, a Haier Company, and Sean Simmons, senior assistant general counsel, Electrolux Home Products. Colyer received the award for contributions related to the development of North American refrigerator safety standards. Simmons received the award for leadership and advocacy on AHAM public policy issues.
