F
rom 'smashed avo' to 'snags'…
for debut visitors to Sydney, the
biggest challenge will likely be
translating Australian slang into
comprehensible English. As a
general rule of thumb, any word that can be
shortened, will be. Arvo (afternoon), sesh
(session), cuppa (cup of tea), mozzie (mos-
quito)… while 'no worries' actually means
'you're welcome', and 'she'll be right' is a
comforting phrase applied in situations of
varying seriousness, from closing-time at
the pub to a deadly snake-bite.
If attempts to decipher any kind of mean-
ing fail, just smile and say 'cheers mate, an-
other schooner' (thank you friend, I would
appreciate another beer)DQG\RXoOOƬWLQ
just like a local.
