26 | SignatureMT Klehfoth first noticed the leers when he came to Montana in 2011, and assumed that someone had already taken the trouble to photograph them. Although wikipedia mentions approximately 500 hillside leers known to exist in the United States, and several websites and a book are available on the topic, none are specific to Montana. "At first I naively considered a really big ladder to get the view I wanted," he says, but soon realized the remote controlled camera-equipped drone was his only option. "It's important that the pictures share fundamental characteristics, but expose deviations that make them unique," he says. "I treat the pictures like portraits more than landscapes." Hundreds of painted tires grace Sheridan's hillside S. Governor Steve Bullock holds Klehfoth's gift displaying MONTANA in his hillside letter photos. Klehfoth would welcome information leading to the identity of the materials used in the T in Terry, which, despite careful scrutiny, remains a mystery. This trout hillside sculpture was created next to a P for Park County, (not pictured), in Livingston. Featured here in a hillside selfie, Klehfoth uses remote controls to fly his drone under the watchful eyes of one of his two ever- vigilant dogs. The Elliston E is one of only two E's in the state-- the other one is in Ennis.
