New Taproom Brings Fresh Flavor s to Downtown Monterey B Y R E N E E B R I N C K S M onterey's newest beer destination modernizes the German beer garden concept with communal tables, Adirondack chairs around a fire pit, and heat lamps to cut the chilly evening air—plus a shipping container bar outfitted with more than a dozen regularly rotating taps. Fieldwork Brewing Company's Munras Avenue taproom, the brand's fifth loca- tion, brings one of the San Francisco Bay Area's most buzzed-about breweries to the down- town corridor. Head brewer Alex Tweet worked at San Diego's Ballast Point and helped open Modern Times Beer before launching this northern California venture with co-owner Barry Braden. As they considered satellites for their Berkeley- based brewery, Monterey stood out. "We knew there was a great craft beer com- munity here, with Alvarado Street and others," says Braden, whose team has released more than 300 different beers since the brand launched in February 2015. Available in tasting flights, pints, to-go growlers and crowlers (the large-format, filled-to-order cans can be pre-ordered on the Fieldwork website), the beers reflect a commit- ment to quality and experimentation. "We want people to experience something different every time they visit one of our tap- rooms," Braden says. "Alex and I talk about this all the time—the most gratifying piece is just having people enjoy the beer." For more information about Fieldwork Brewing Company, please visit www.fieldworkbrewing.com. SHORTCUTS BUSINESS Fieldwork Brewing Company has opened a new outlet in downtown Monterey that features more than a dozen regularly rotating drafts in a beer garden setting. 74 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • H O L I D A Y 2 0 1 7 Photo: Courtesy of Fieldwork Brewing Company
