Game 10 vs. Purdue Boilermakers < < < 54 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOLS At the center of Northwestern is the oldest, largest, and most comprehensive of its undergraduate schools, the JUDD A. AND MARJORIE WEINBERG COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. More than 100 majors, minors, areas of study and special programs are available through departments and interdisciplinary programs spanning the arts and humanities, foreign languages, mathematics and statistics, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Students may enhance their studies with independent research projects, ad hoc majors or minors, Chicago field studies and study abroad. The SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION offers students the chance to study the arts and sciences of communication, which involve finding better ways to connect human beings with each other. From majors that focus on the visual and performing arts, to majors focused on understanding how communication works from a scientific perspective, the school deals with every aspect of communication and its role in human interaction and culture. The SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND SOCIAL POLICY offers four programs of study that explore the causes and effects of change in the most critical areas of society: human development and psychological services, learning and organizational change, secondary teaching, and social policy. Practicum experiences and the Summer Field Studies Program allow students to apply their academic training in real-world settings. In addition, the Civic Engagement Certificate Program allows first-year students, sophomores and juniors at Northwestern to translate their interest in community service to academic credit. The ROBERT R. McCORMICK SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE offers 14 majors—including such interdisciplinary fields as biomedical engineering and materials science and engineering—as well as four honors programs, five certificate programs, and a co-op program. In the two-quarter Design Thinking Communication course, first-year students design solutions to problems for actual clients ranging from individuals to major companies. Students in the MEDILL SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM, MEDIA, INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS master storytelling for different media and learn techniques specific to a news and information industry: magazine, news, broadcast, or marketing communications. Medill extends its learn-by-doing philosophy beyond the classroom by offering real-world training and immersion. Medill students have a chance to hone their skills at a variety of independent campus media, including the award-winning Daily Northwestern newspaper and the Northwestern News Network. One of the oldest degree-granting music institutions in the United States, the HENRY AND LEIGH BIENEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC offers students conservatory-level training within the setting of a major research university. The school encourages students to explore multiple areas of interest and offers five-year dual Bachelor's degree programs combining music with the arts and sciences, engineering, or journalism. This comprehensive approach to education prepares Bienen School students to succeed no matter what career path they choose: performance, teaching arts, administration or graduate or professional school.
