STOPs S & STARTS USA HOCKEY NEWS & UPDATES A Rock Solid Foundation For Giving Back To The Game Thanks to the generosity of donors and members, hockey has influenced thousands of lives. Whether it is a disabled athlete finding inner-strength by being on the ice, an underprivileged teenager learning positive lessons at the rink, or a gold medal for Team USA, The USA Hockey Foundation is grateful for the impact its donors have had on the game. ince 1993, The USA Hockey Foundation has been making grants to organizations and local affiliates to help grow and strengthen the game around the country. New App Puts CEP At Your Fingertips The following is just a glimpse into what the Foundation grants have helped accomplish this year: • In New York State, four trailers of hockey gear were purchased and distributed for Try Hockey For Free days so that kids who have never tried the sport could get the opportunity to do so. The USA Hockey Foundation has an illustri- ous history of giving back to great local programs. • Eight years ago, Ed Snider Youth Hockey, a USA Hockey Foundation grant award winner, introduced Virlen Reyes to the sport. An inner-city Philadelphia youth, Virlen now plays on her college team. Having never had a goal before finding hockey, Virlen is grateful for hockey and what it has taught her and credits the sport with getting her on the right track. • The investment in our elite players has helped keep America strong on the international stage. Currently 65 percent of NCAA Div. I players are American, as are nearly 25 percent of NHL players. Our women's program continues to be one of the top programs in the world. • The USA Hockey Sled Lending Program receives funding through The USA Hockey Foundation to provide sleds to rinks across the country that are interested in getting disabled athletes involved in the game. • The Mayo Clinic receives funding to study concussions and possible advancements in the game to help prevent injuries. The Lester Patrick Award, which is presented annually for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, was also given to long-time Fort Wayne Komets broadcaster Bob Chase-Wallenstein. Since Patrick's arrival into the Washington Capitals' front office in 1982, the franchise has been to the postseason in 23 of the 29 seasons, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 1998. Among his many accomplishments, Patrick spearheaded construction of the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the Caps' state-of-the-art training facility that also is home to local youth hockey programs. A legendary and pioneering broadcaster for radio station WOWO in Fort Wayne, Ind., Chase- Wallenstein is entering his 60th season of broadcasting Komets hockey. The native of Negaunee, Mich., arrived at WOWO in 1953 and began calling games for what then was a second-year franchise.
