My first job in racing was in the press department of the New York Racing Association, during the time when Bob Duncan was the assistant starter on the gate. In our eight years of joint employment for the same company, we never spoke a single word to one another. Twenty-five years later, he would go on to marry my best friend, and in turn, become a good friend of mine. I saw him speak about his techniques on the starting gate at the 2011 Welfare and Safety Summit, and the truth of his presentation has stayed with me for years. In this month's TDN Weekend, we're proud to feature our conversa- tion with Bob on those same topics. We also hit up two rac- ing hotspots this month, with some advice on where to stay, what to do, and where to eat if you're heading to Cape Town for the L'Ormarins Queens Plate Racing Festival, or the Cape Thoroughbred Sales. If you're going to Hong Kong for the in- ternational races, there's only one place you have to eat, and that's at the track. Read on to find out why. Speaking of food, did you know that 90% of the fish caught off American shores is sent overseas…and 70% of it comes back? If you find that as unappetizing as we did, TDN Weekend has found a solution for those of you looking for fresh, sustainable fish…and just in time for the holiday season. But what does this have to do with horse racing? We caught up with Harbour Trading Com- pany's David Goldsmith at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. And finally, after Songbird's epic $9.5 million sale at Fasig-Tipton, we catch up with the ever-inspiring Rick Porter. Enjoy, and happy holidays.
