Our patients are among the first in the state to benefit from an innovative CardioMEMS™ implant to monitor and manage congestive heart failure. The CardioMEMS system features a sensor that is inserted in the pulmonary artery during a minimally invasive procedure to directly measure pressure. The system allows patients to transmit daily sensor readings from their homes to their healthcare providers for personalized and proactive management. This information can help clinicians detect worsening heart failure sooner and adjust treatment to reduce the likelihood that the patient will need to be hospitalized. The CardioMEMS sensor is designed to last the lifetime of the patient and doesn't require batteries. Once implanted, the wireless sensor sends pain-free pressure readings to an external patient electronic system. Data from a New York Heart Association clinical trial noted that such technology reduced heart failure hospital readmissions by almost 40 percent for patients who had been hospitalized for heart failure in the previous year. "This new technology greatly benefits our patients, making it even easier for them to access," says Vicki Miller, outreach/ programs manager at Prairie Heart Institute. Introducing CardioMEMS to Southern Illinois 5.7 MILLION Number of Americans with Heart Failure 670,000 New Cases Diagnosed Each Year 4
