The Melbourne Cup, run on a Tuesday, kicks a good
Saturday night almost literally into the middle of
next week. For the European traveler – or 'raider' as
we must be known – it can be tricky knowing whether
the worst excesses of bad behaviour are induced by
alcohol (Australian rosé, it turns out, is quite pass-
able) or by jetlag's bottomless well of unending
sleeplessness. Whatever, the raucousness included a
spectacular performance by the owners and entou-
rage (including Sandra Ince, Iman Volz and my wife
Judy Rumbold – they're the glamorous, statuesque
beauties promised in the first paragraph) in the spe-
cial parade through the centre of Melbourne on the
