Many lakes, especially those in the Northern Hemisphere, were created
because of the most recent ice age. Around 18,000 years ago, large
areas of land were covered by massive pieces of ice. These pieces of ice
scrubbed the land and carved out large pits as they slowly moved along.
When these glaciers melted, water filled the large depressions creating
our modern-day lakes.
