w i n t e r 2 0 1 8 | 7 7 LATE ON A SUNDAY MORNING at the precipice of fall last year, I man- aged to find a dirt road somewhere between Moorpark and Thousand Oaks marked only with a pair of mint-green balloons. I passed sporadic crops and trees, a ranch, and a greenhouse or two before finally arriving at a dirt parking lot. An older man waved his arms to direct me into a makeshift spot as his dog happily wagged his tail in near-synchronicity. At any other event I might've thought bringing your dog to work in a parking lot would not be a good idea, but this was the Emerald Exchange—conventional rules did not apply here. Plus, the dog did look like some sort of herding breed. As I walked to- ward reception, I watched him help drive a small pack of cars to the spots his owner indicated.
