This Gem of a Hot
Springs Shares
Sacred Space Between
Malta and Saco
C
anadian singer-songwriter, Garnet Rogers,
traveling along Highway 2 noticed, "gis
of tobacco, bundles of Sweet
grass tied with colored thread and live
ammunition," at the base of two, very large,
sacred stones, a memorial and tribute to
ancient peoples and their buffalo.
Located halfway between Malta and Saco,
the historic point of interest also marks the
turnoff for Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs.
"I was struck, at the time," says Rogers,
that a plaque referred to the stones as having,
" 'been considered sacred,' by the tribes who
lived there. I wondered who had decided
they 'were' sacred'. Past tense."
Inspired, he wrote a song entitled,
"Sleeping Buffalo," on an album he calls
"Small Victories." Both titles uncannily
describe the inspiration shared by the
owners and renovators, Dennis and
Michelle Simpson.
"THE BUFFALO"!
