Born and raised in Alberta, Lanny came up through the Canadian youth hockey system,
working hard and excelling at every level, eventually earning a spot his rookie season
(1973) with the National Hockey Leagues (NHL) Toronto Maple Leaf 's. His prolific,
16-year career on the ice comprised over 1,100 games during which time he scored 500
plus goals and more than 1,000 points for the Maple Leaf 's, Rockies and Calgary Flames.
Lanny capped his career in 1989 when he contributed a go-ahead goal to the Flames
Game 6 closeout win over the Montreal Canadiens, bringing the Stanley Cup to Calgary
for the first time. is level of productivity and success earned him numerous accolades
and awards including having his Number 9 retired by the Calgary Flames and induction
into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the Hockey
Hall of Fame.
