Pilbara National Parks The ancient landscape of the Pilbara is home to stunning national parks. Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park The longest uninterrupted stretch of beach in Western Australia, the Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park is renowned for its flatback turtle population and is rich in other marine life such as dolphins and dugongs. It is also popular with birdwatchers, given it is one of the world's most important feeding grounds for migratory and wader birds. With wonderful views, the beach is popular for camping, fishing, wildlife viewing and its stunning sunsets. You can access Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park off the North West Coastal Highway via the 10km access road to the Eighty Mile Caravan Park 293km north of Port Hedland and 332km south of Broome. Karijini National Park The jewel of the Pilbara, the Karijini experience is an adventure more than two billion years in the making. One of its big attractions is its accessibility. Pull into the car park, walk 50 metres to peer into a 100 metre deep gorge to see waterfalls and emerald coloured rock pools below. For the fit and adventurous, you can take one of the many walk trails to further explore the gorges. Karijini is teeming with wildlife including red kangaroos, rock wallabies, echidnas, dingoes, bats and the rare pebble mouse. Travellers can access the park from Port Hedland, Karratha, Tom Price, or Newman via sealed and unsealed roads. Please note the section of private road between Millstream Chichester Park and Tom Price requires a permit which can be obtained from the Visitor Centres located in Tom Price, Karratha and Roebourne. There are toilet, shower and basic camping facilities, and an Aboriginal owned and operated eco-retreat. Make sure you drop into the award winning interactive visitor centre for a park brochure. Karijini highlights include Fortescue Falls, Circular Pool and Fern Pool in Dales Gorge. The junction of four mighty gorges – Red, Weano, Joffre and Hancock Gorges can be viewed from Oxers Lookout. Whether it's a light walk or a vigorous hike you're seeking, you won't be disappointed by your Karijini adventure. Karlamilyi National Park (formerly Rudall River National Park) At over 1,200,000 hectares, the Karlamilyi National Park is the largest national park in Western Australia and is one of the most remote places on earth. The park sits on the boundary between the Great Sandy and Little Sandy Deserts. The closest settlement is Newman, hundreds of kilometres away. The area is extremely rugged and remote. You should not travel through here unless you have exceptional off-road experience, are well prepared and have sufficient food, water, medical and mechanical supplies. Please be aware there are no facilities by way of communications, fresh water supplies, signage, park ranger services, camping facilities or picnic areas.
