Inland Pilbara Home to the spectacular wilderness areas of Millstream Chichester and Karijini National Parks, the small mining towns of the inland Pilbara offer a friendly face, a unique insight into life in the outback, and a chance to explore off the beaten track. Tom Price At 747 metres, Tom Price is the highest town in Western Australia. This township is a great place to stop and the wonders of Karijini National Park are just 60 minutes away. The town offers a caravan park and hotel/motel as accommodation options. • Visit King's Lake for a barbecue or picnic. • Check out the massive Rio Tinto Iron Ore Mine on an organised tour. • Take a (4WD only) drive or walk to the top of Mt Nameless. The peak stands 1128 metres above sea level. • Experience the wonder of Karijini National Park. Self-drive and explore or take a tour which depart on demand between April to October. • Watch the iron ore trains travel through the edge of town at a number of popular trainspotting locations. Ask the Visitor Centre for directions. Pannawonica This small mining town is situated 47 kilometres along a sealed road off the North West Coastal Highway, between the Onslow turn off and Fortescue Roadhouse. • Pannawonica is the western gateway to Millstream Chichester National Park where you can explore its expansive ranges and fresh waterways. • Check out the quirky Boot Tree, which has become a local tradition when people who leave the town permanently hang their boots from this tree. • Take a dip in the nearby Robe River swimming holes and spread out a picnic beneath the shady trees. Revel in the Rodeo • Usually held in September, the Robe River Rodeo is a popular event. See real cowboys enjoy the thrill of the ride. Paraburdoo Lying 24 kilometres north of the Tropic of Capricorn on a sealed road linking Nanutarra Roadhouse and Tom Price, Paraburdoo is home to the main commercial airport for the inland Pilbara region and offers a caravan park and motel accommodation. • Keep your eyes peeled for UFOs! There have been numerous reported sightings over the years. • Drive to Palm Springs, a permanent water source with great birdwatching located 50km along the Paraburdoo–Tom Price Road. • Visit the large sculpture, titled RESILIENCE, located about three kilometres from Paraburdoo, on the road to Tom Price. It references the mining industry, geological history, Aboriginal culture and the resilience of remote Western Australian communities. The sculpture is, in part, made from steel plate shaped during a series of controlled blasts on the Rio Tinto mine site. • Head to Kelly's Pool which is eight kilometres out of town and where there are picnic facilities, however please note swimming is not permitted. Discover rock art • With permission to access the Dirt Road from the Rio Tinto Mine Gate House, view Aboriginal rock art 50 kilometres away at Ratty Springs.
