Derby and the Buccaneer Archipelago Situated on King Sound, 220 kilometres north east of Broome, Derby has the highest tidal variation in Australia. It is the closest point to the magnificent islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago and is the gateway to outback adventure along the Gibb River Road. Shop • View and purchase art at Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre, a creative hub for the Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunumbal tribes united by their belief in the Wandjina. • Visit the Derby Visitor Centre for up to date information on Derby, the Gibb River Road and the Horizontal Falls. The Centre also stocks a large range of souvenirs and locally created products. • There are a variety of Derby retailers from which to purchase supplies, fishing gear and camping equipment for your Kimberley adventure. Explore • Enjoy the sunset from the jetty or take an evening walk on the tidal flats. • Take a scenic flight, fishing trip or sea safari to the Horizontal Falls and the Buccaneer Archipelago. • Hug a boab! These sculptural trees can be found throughout Derby and are synonymous with the town. • Visit the Boab Prison Tree 7km from the town. Believed to be around 1500 years old, the tree was used as a staging point for prisoners being walked into Derby. • Step back in time at the Wharfinger House Museum where the wharf's history is revealed. Open upon request, ask at the Derby Visitor Centre where they will give you a key. • Follow the Derby Pastoral Trail from One Mile Dinner Tree to the Derby Wharf. • Take a leisurely stroll along the 3km Joonjoo Botanical Trail and learn about the local flora and how it was used by the Nyikina people. • Take a day tour to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek National Parks. • Visit the Old Derby Gaol and the Pioneer Cemetery.
