OUR TOP 15 TRAVEL TIPS Very few places in the world offer the isolation and ruggedness found in Australia's North West, where hundreds of kilometres can separate towns and attractions. Whilst this is a major attraction in itself, it does mean that careful planning prior to departure will lead to a more enjoyable holiday experience. 1 Accommodation There is a wide range of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. Many towns throughout the North West support strong tourist numbers between May and October. It is advisable to book your accommodation well ahead of your holiday to avoid disappointment. Be aware that some caravan parks do not take advance bookings during the peak season. Those travelling with pets are also recommended to check the location of pet-friendly caravan parks. 2 Healthy Travelling The isolation and ruggedness found in Australia's North West can be adventurous and exciting, but it can also carry risks. In order to reduce the risk of problems during your holiday, there are a few things you can do before you set off. Always carry adequate supplies of water and a comprehensive first aid kit. If you take prescribed medication make sure you will have enough for the duration of your trip and bring a script renewal from your doctor. Mosquitoes can carry diseases such as Encephalitis and Ross River virus. Use insect repellents and cover your arms and legs with loose clothing particularly at dawn and dusk. PLAN YOUR TRIP "ca efully before hitt i g the road" 3 Road Safety It's essential to carefully plan your trip before hitting the road. Get a recent detailed road map and it's a good idea to keep track of your mileage so you know where you are. Many towns are remote; so if you find yourself in trouble, assistance could be hours away. Be aware of your vehicle's limits and take your time. If you plan to travel on dirt roads, familiarise yourself with safe four wheel driving techniques and potential risks. Driver fatigue is responsible for many accidents so take regular breaks, enjoy the experience and don't try to cover too much distance at a time. Make certain you advise a reliable contact of your intended route and your estimated time of arrival, and be sure to let them know when you get there! 4 Vehicles It is essential that your vehicle is thoroughly checked before you depart. Not only is it dangerous to break down in the outback, its expensive! Some remote areas are accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles, and the towing of caravans, trailers or boats is not recommended. A first aid kit, tool kit, food, water, at least two spare tyres and spare parts should be kept as standard – along with the knowledge of how to use them. 6 | www.australiasnorthwest.com
