Halls Creek Halls Creek sits on the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert and is a gateway to natural attractions including the striking formation of the white quartz China Wall, the orange and black striped domes of the Purnululu National Park Bungle Bungle Range, and the dramatic impression of the Wolfe Creek Crater, formed 300,000 years ago when a meteorite crashed to earth. Explore • Watch the sunset from Moola Bulla Lookout, a short drive past the Old Trackers Hut and just a few kilometres out of town. • Learn more about the town's history by following the series of decorated hand crafted wooden totems on a self-guided Halls Creek Town Walk. • Take a scenic flight over the World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park Bungle Bungle Range. • View the China Wall, a sub-vertical quartz rock protruding six metres off the ground lining the surrounding hills. • Go swimming, picnicking and fishing at Sawpit Gorge. • Enjoy the tranquil scenery of freshwater springs at Palm Springs or Caroline Pool. • Need to connect? Log on to the free WIFI at the Shire Park and at the Halls Creek Travel and Tourism Centre. • Admire the artworks that make up the Halls Creek Outdoor Art and Culture Project designed to reflect the towns cultural diversity. More than 80 artworks in the form of car bonnets and rubbish bins adorn the streets and visitor pathways to the many natural attractions in the district. • Visit the art centre in town which showcases local Aboriginal artists. • Visit the additional art centre located at the bottom of town by the creek. View and purchase the many beautiful artworks on display in the gallery and have a wander through the artist studio as work is being produced. • Drive the 145 kilometres from Halls Creek via the Tanami Road into the northern fringe of the Great Sandy Desert to visit Wolfe Creek Crater. • Visit Old Halls Creek, 16 kilometres along the Duncan Road from the Great Northern Highway, home to the first gold discovery in WA in 1885. Did you know? While Wolfe Creek Crater was only discovered by Europeans during an aerial survey in 1947, it had long been known to Aboriginal people, who called it Kandimalal. It is thought two rainbow snakes formed the nearby Sturt and Wolfe Creeks and the crater is believed to be the place where one snake emerged from the ground. 76 | www.australiasnorthwest.com
