"We're extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and number of participating in World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "USA Hockey has been, and will continue to be, a leader in helping grow participation in girls' and women's hockey." Among the events that took place Oct. 13-14 included American Development locations to Model clinics, hockey jamborees, Try Hockey for Free opportunities, female- only tournaments, introductory sessions about the sport and other hockey- themed gatherings. Among the events that took place over the weekend were the Atlantic District's 12 & Under Jamboree, along with an American Development Model clinic and a women's tournament. U.S. Women's National Team goaltender Jessie Vetter was on hand to help kick off the festivities in West Chester, Pa. The NHL's Anaheim Ducks hosted a Try Hockey for Free session at THE RINKS in Westminster, Calif., where participants received instruction from Anaheim Lady Ducks coaches and players on the basics of hockey. The Channel Islands Ice Center in Oxnard, Calif., held a season kickoff party for girls already participating in the rink's program along with those interested in learning more about the game. U.S. Olympian Jesse Vetter helped kick off Girls Ice Hockey Weekend in West Chester, Pa. International Support Powers Japanese Equipment Drive USA Hockey has teamed up with Bauer Hockey and Hockey Canada to donate 150 sets of equipment to help children with the Japan Ice Hockey Federation get back in the game. This much-needed support for youth hockey across Japan is being offered to families as they continue to recover from the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated many northeastern coastal communities in March 2011. "We're pleased to join in helping the young people of Japan," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Together with our friends at Hockey Canada and Bauer, we hope to make a small difference in recovery efforts through this outreach effort." The initiative came about after the North American organizations reached out to the Japan Ice Hockey Federation to come up with a plan to support their sister IIHF national association in a time of need.
