Bilingual persons who would like to interpret or pursue a bilingual career in a healthcare setting can gain skills necessary to interpret in a manner consistent with national standards of practice for interpreters. Interpreting is a value-added skill for bilingual healthcare workers. Interpreter training is required to apply to the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters for national certification. Learn about medical vocabulary in English and Spanish, body systems, legal issues, ethics, standards of practice, cultural awareness, and more. Emphasis is placed on practicing interpretation in consecutive and simultaneous modes. According to the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare, an interpreter renders a message orally into another language while abiding by a code of professional ethics (The Terminology of Healthcare Interpreting: A Glossary of Terms, 2012). Students who successfully complete the Spanish Medical Interpreter program will be able to interpret or pursue a bilingual job in a healthcare setting and gain skills to interpret in a manner consistent with national standards of practice for interpreters in healthcare. Program Notes: Externship hours are site specific and may require attendance any day of the week, including during unscheduled days and times. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be qualified to sit for national certification exams through CCHI and NBMI.
