4 LETTER FROM THE GENERAL CHAIR On behalf of AAPG, the Organizing Committee and support from The Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), it is my pleasure to invite you to the 2018 International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) under the theme "Shaping the Future in a Changing Energy Landscape." The event will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, 4–7 November 2018. I am delighted that Cape Town has been chosen as the location for this year's ICE as it's a city renowned not only for its unique geological and geographical setting but also the exceptional warmth and hospitality of its people. It is therefore not a coincidence that Cape Town has the singular honor of being the first city in Africa to host ICE twice. As the world's premier professional geoscience association, AAPG provides a platform for formulating solutions to the key challenges facing the energy industry. We are a global organization of oil and gas professionals focused on the science of petroleum geology with more than 30,000 members in 129 countries. Since its formation in 1917, the purpose of AAPG has remained the same — to foster scientific research, to advance the science of geology, to promote technology, and to inspire professional conduct. The 2008 ICE Cape Town was a resounding success with more than 1,950 participants, 70-plus technical sessions, several short courses, special forums, featured luncheon speakers, and outstanding geologic and cultural field trips showcasing the best of African geology and culture. To provide an even richer experience for participants, the 2018 ICE Cape Town is a unique conference as it will be co-located with Africa Oil Week at the International Convention Centre. The conference therefore presents an opportunity for the world's leading geologists, geophysicists, and other petroleum industry professionals not only to connect and share knowledge, develop their skills, discover technology innovations, and network with their peers, but it also offers them the opportunity to meet with decision makers and top industry executives. With an impressive number of abstracts submitted, the Technical Program Committee has developed an exceptional program of oral and poster presentations. The technical program is focused around 12 core themes, History of Petroleum E&P in Africa; Conventional Reservoirs; Unconventional Resources; Exploration and Production in Mature Basins; New and Emerging Exploration Basins; Deep-water Exploration and Production; Petroleum Systems, Basin Modeling and Risk; Tectonics, Basins, and Trap Formation; Integration of Geophysics with Geology; Deriving Value from the Integration of Geoscience; Innovation and Technology; Business and Regulatory Environment. The conference will commence with the Opening Ceremony, which will feature high-level industry leaders from across the globe. The program will also include two executive plenary sessions titled 'Global Energy Supply and Demand: Where Does the Road Lead?' and 'Capitalizing on Africa's Success; Energy for Economic Prosperity' along with five panel sessions. Four special sessions of invited talks will take place across the four days and will cover the History of Petroleum E&P in Africa, the Increasing Importance of Gas, Business and Regulatory Environment, and E&P and the Environment We Live In. A total of 10 exciting field trips both pre- and post-conference are planned along with seven short courses. There is also a diverse program of activities planned for students and young professionals attending the conference. An event of this magnitude is only possible due to the dedication and tireless commitment of the technical team, members of the Organizing Committee, the AAPG staff and members of affiliate and sister organizations, and the army of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this conference a success. But above all we owe a debt of gratitude to the companies who are not only participating and exhibiting but also providing financial support and who allowed their employees to share their knowledge. Africa, particularly East Africa, is widely touted as one of the emerging hydrocarbon provinces of the 21st Century with major oil and gas discoveries in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Even with these finds, the continent remains relatively unexplored. At this conference, you will learn how the operators plan to monetize these discoveries and where the next set of licenses, farm-ins, and merger and acquisition (M&A) opportunities are. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I invite you to join us in Cape Town and be part of the industry's leading global geoscience conference of the year. Sincerely, Femi Esan General Chair ICE 2018 Organizing Committee
