times…he had a huge spirit." McBride and Remembering Ray Brown takes the Jimmy Lyons Stage Saturday at 8:50pm. Celebrating Michael Brecker E ven if you don't know the name Michael Brecker, if you've been listening to music of any kind in the last five decades, you've no doubt heard his distinctive saxophone work. That's because in addition to his huge catalog of jazz recordings—many with Dreams and the seminal The Brecker Brothers with his trumpeter sibling Randy—he enjoyed a prolif- ic career as a sideman with a dizzyingly- diverse set of ar tists such as Todd Rundgren, Billy Cobham, Parliament, Frank Zappa, Aerosmith, George Benson, Jaco Pastorius, Dire Straits, James Taylor—even Frank Sinatra. Brecker passed away in 2007. This all-star tribute features friends and col- leagues—and a family member—who knew him well, both musically and personally: Randy Brecker, pianist Gil Goldstein, saxophonist (and Santa Cruz native) Donny McCaslin, drummer Antonio Sanchez, bassist John Patitucci and gui- tarist Adam Rogers. Downbeat for Celebrating Michael Brecker is Sunday at 8:20pm on the Jimmy Lyons Stage. The 61st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival takes John Clayton played in "Superbass" with fellow bassists Christian McBride and the late, great Ray Brown. He and McBride pay tribute to their mentor. Trumpet master Randy Brecker leads an all-star lineup of musicians in playing hom- age to his late brother and frequent collaborator, tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker.
