The Carmel Treasure Maps of Lisa Br yan B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D I t's a well-known fact that Carmel started life as a haven for artists—and painters in par- ticular. That still holds true for Lisa Bryan. A visit in the 1970s changed her life. "I took one look around and knew I had to live here," she says. She set up shop in the Cour t of the Fountains on Mission between Ocean and 7th. There, she paints por traits of horses, dogs and the charming buildings of Carmel. She pub- lished a book, "Sketches of Carmel-by-the-Sea: The First Souvenir Guide of its Kind!" and from there got the idea to produce eye-catching watercolor maps to help visitors find the vil- lage's unique businesses. "I have painted about 16 maps so far," Bryan says, "and print and distribute nearly 90,000 maps every year." The maps are free to visitors and available all over town. Br yan works closely with the Carmel Chamber of Commerce and city officials. "I've taken it upon myself to promote this city," she says. "These maps end up going all over the world." They are fun to peruse and contain witty, hid- den surprises. "This is a beautiful town that inspired me to paint," Bryan says. "No one has portrayed the city this way."
