SiG MT 20 Text by Mark Baune BEER MAN S MT A Gem of a Brewery in Montana's Golden Triangle Not too long ago, we ventured up north to Cut Bank for our little one's 40 th birthday. If you have been to Cut Bank, there is no doubt you have seen the giant, 10,000 pound, 27 foot tall penguin that welcomes passersby from its spot in front of the Glacier Gateway Inn. On a good day, (when the speaker is working) you might hear it say, "Welcome to Cut Bank, the coldest spot in the nation!" Unfortunately for us, there wasn't a peep during our visit. However, we paid our respects to the flightless, aquatic bird when we knocked back a few tasty malt beverages at the Cut Bank Creek Brewery. Now this is a place you have to visit. Tucked smack dab in the heart of malt barley country, this brewery is surrounded by two of the most important ingredients in the brewing industry; barley and clean water. The majority of the malt barley they use is grown within 30 miles of the brewery and with Glacier National Park being the headwaters of Cut Bank Creek, they have access to a year-round supply of clean, fresh water. Kim and Louie Stoltz opened the brewery in June of 2017 and have been going strong ever since. Their attention to detail and utilizing some of the finest ingredients makes for some really good beer. The names reference the areas oil industry, agriculture, Blackfeet culture and Glacier National park. I had the pleasure of sampling all six. Here are a few of my favorites. The Penguin Piss, a humorous reference to the town greeter, is definitely my go to beer every time I pay a visit to the brewery. This great amber checks in at 5.4% ABV and 28.4 IBU's. This is a perfect starter before moving on to the darker ones. The Roughneck Red is an Irish red that, as its name suggests, pours a delightful red and finishes very clean. This one checks in at 27.3 IBU's and a solid 5.3% ABV. This is a very good red and it keeps very well in a growler. The Sweat Grass is a very sessionable wheat at 3.6% ABV and 16 IBU's. With this one, you can drink all your allotted beers and still feel pretty good. This wheat beer offers a novel flavor experience with a perfect balance of yeast and fermentation. It has a nice rich haze to it also. The Warrior IPA is lip smacking yummy! It doesn't rip your lips off like some other IPA's, but rather it offers just the right amount of bitterness to catch your attention with no after taste. This is just a really good beer. In the spirit of giving back to the community, the Stoltz's open their doors to non-profit organizations regularly as a way of thanking folks for supporting them. Once a month, from 5pm to 8pm, they sponsor an organization and for every pint sold, they donate one dollar to that nonprofit. They are also family friendly and welcome all ages with root beer and ginger ale brewed in house, board games and a corn hole set up out back if you are up for a little competition. So, on your way to Glacier National Park, go through Cut Bank and stock up on some growlers. You won't be sorry you made the drive! Thanks and happy beer hunting!
