is moderate hike is well worth the time and effort it requires as it shows
off sights unique to Glacier National Park. Enjoy glacier-carved turquoise
lakes to high waterfalls to lush forests. We recommend joining a ranger-led
hike to learn how the terrain became what it is today.
DISTANCE: 3.8 miles with 500 feet of elevation gain
TIME: 3-4 hours
STARTING POINT: Trail of the Cedars trailhead: look for the Avalanche
Gorge Bridge along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
is trail is one of the only family-friendly hikes in the Lake McDonald
Region that truly gives you a taste of the essence of Glacier National Park.
When we reached Avalanche Lake, we knew we were someplace very
special! Here you will see obvious evidence of glaciation and avalanches.
To learn more about the rocks, rivers, lakes, and avalanche and glaciation
history in Glacier, try to coordinate your schedule with a ranger-led hike.
We would have walked past so many interesting phenomena if we had
hiked the trail on our own. e ranger is your guide and storyteller going
up, but aer reaching the top you are on your own to retrace your steps
back to the trailhead. is worked well for us since our kids craved that
opportunity to be independent and explore for themselves.
