year the Italian sales will be bigger. Last year we had 80 horses, this year the entries are double." While Le.Gi. will also be offering at Tattersalls a Night of Thunder filly out of Sopran Enery, a winning half-sister to the Derby Italiano and British Group 3 winner Cima de Triomphe, the bulk of the stud's year- lings—nine of their own and four for clients—will be consigned at the SGA Sale in Milan on September 22. Massimo and Giovanni Parri have travelled as far afield as Keeneland to find the right bloodlines for their venture, and have good contacts with their Eu- ropean neighbours, but it remains their ambition to continue to develop and promote the equine families of a nation whose roots run so deep in Thoroughbred breeding. When we go to the sales, we are not investing huge amounts of money so we try to find a good bal- ance with the line and also the quality of the mare. We don't like to buy small mares; we like big mares with good bone. For us it's important. If you know a horse, you know the brother and sister and not just the phys- ical aspects but also their heads. Temperament is so important; it's not just about pedigree." He adds, "We think it's the right thing for us to have Italian families because we know the lines." It remains their ambition to CONTINUE TO DEVELOP AND PROMOTE the equine families of a nation whose roots run so deep
