The world's oldest horse race is also one of its most famous: Siena's Palio, held twice a year on July 2 and August 16, is on many a racing lover's bucket list. This past July, a team of TDN writers, photographers, and videographers traveled to Tuscany to bring the event to life for TDN Weekend readers. While you're in the Siena province for the Palio, you'll need somewhere to stay, and there's no nicer place on earth than the joint 3,500-acre estate of La Foce and Chiarentana. Owned by the Origo family for almost a century, the now-luxurious collection of holiday rental farmhous- es played an important role during World War II. And what would Italy be without great wine? The team trav- eled to Sassicaia, where not only did they find great wines, but a classic breeding and training ground that was once home to the great Ribot. The new head of the Italian breeders, Massimo Parri, chats with Emma Berry and shows off his stud farm, Allevamento Le.Gi, and Chris McGrath visits with an American lawyer so captivated by one Italian town on a visit 15 years ago that he bought the whole thing. You'll love the story of Monteverdi. Finally, special thanks to Paolo Romanelli, who arranged our credentials to the Palio and visits to Sassicaia and Le.Gi. We couldn't have published this edition without his help. True enough, so far as it goes, but hardly adequate to describe the kind of yearning it is intended to satisfy. By Chris McGrath 70 SASSICAIA: THE THOROUGHBRED OF ITALIAN WINES Ribot and Sassicaia can be mentioned in the same breath not only because they are both great Italian exports, but because they were nurtured and developed on the same land, and by the same family, in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany.
