at the helm since the early 1970s. Also involved is Nicolò's daughter,
Priscilla, so the family's leadership looks ensured for years to come.
Today, Tenuta San Guido has devoted 90 hectares to Sassicaia,
which is aged 24 months in wooden barrels. In the year 2000, Tenuta
San Guido introduced Guidalberto, which is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon
and 40% Merlot. The most recent addition to the roster is Le Difese,
which is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese.
There are now 43 wine producers in the Bolgheri DOC, and the
worth of a single hectare can be complex, depending on the poten-
tial vines, Marchetto said.
"People started to invest here not 30, 40 years ago, but 18 years
ago," she said. "With the new millennium there was this wave of big
producers that came here."

export is likely assured, Sassicaia has certainly done its part to
ensure that the Bolgheri name will be recognized globally well
into the 21st century.
