can do it two weeks before. She was a very
fast juvenile, over 1200 meters, and won
what would be a group race today. But she
couldn't run at three, she had bad joints,
wasn't very sound.
"Ribot was by Tenerani, by Bellini, who
was by Cavaliere d'Arpino—each one
bred by Tesio. He always thought Cava-
liere d'Arpino was the best horse he ever
trained. People may not know that horse
so well today, but it gave me such pleasure
when John Hislop wrote that the greatest
breeder, sire, and racehorse of his day
would be Tesio, Nearco, and Ribot."
The Marchese assumed the running of
the vineyard and stable on the death of his
father in 1983. Today the stud still remains
divided between the shores of Lake Mag-
giore and Bolgheri, the young stock com-
muting between the two—initially coming
to Tuscany for a relatively benign winter,
as weanlings, and then to enter training
a year later.
"TESIO'S LESSON?
Always to look
for quality."
