ZOO NEWS MEMBER MAGAZINE 08 MEMBER FEATURE THE ART OF WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY This spring, Melbourne Zoo is excited to host a stunning curated collection of National Geographic's 50 Greatest Wildlife Photographs, highlighting a selection of extraordinary images from their archives. The collection firmly positions National Geographic publications as pioneers and true artists of wildlife photography over their 130-year history. But we know within our Zoo Member community that we are surrounded by greatness too. Every day some of our most talented Zoo Members spend countless hours in awe of the wildlife that lives across our three zoos, waiting patiently for that perfect photograph. We caught up with three promising wildlife photographers to find out how they do it. THROUGH THE LENS In a world-first National Geographic will launch their 50 Greatest Wildlife Photographs in a unique outdoor exhibition at Melbourne Zoo this spring. MEET ZOO MEMBER VAUGHAN KING Vaughan's passion for photography was something he fell into. Having travelled the world and worked as a Zoo Keeper across Australia, Vaughan made the decision to learn how to use a camera properly and never miss the opportunity to take a beautiful photo again. Vaughan generally always has a camera next to him, ready for that incredible animal moment. Whether it's trekking in the bush or pulling over on the side of the road to photograph a bird of prey in flight, he always recommends being prepared. Taking photos at the zoo offers a unique opportunity for Vaughan to hone his skills with an array of subjects to shoot. After years of refining his interest, Vaughan has worked out the answer to getting the perfect wildlife shot: good lighting. "Hands down this has to be the most important aspect of photography." "Shooting wildlife in the early morning or late afternoon sunshine is your best chance at capturing a moody, engaging image." And he has a favourite animal too. Previously a big cat handler, he is most interested in photographs of the cats, particularly the Snow Leopards at Carnivores' Trail. "If you time it right, you can get some great shots of this gorgeous animal roaming its enclosure. It really is quite beautiful."
