orget Paris in the springtime. Every true racing fan knows that Paris in the autumn—or fall, if you prefer—is what it's all about. As the leaves of the giant oaks on the turn in the Bois de Boulogne signal an end to the Turf season, there's time for one last hurrah. Regardless of one's nationali- ty, it's hard to disagree that the European racing calendar reaches its heady climax at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting, more easily known simply as 'Arc weekend.' While ParisLongchamp underwent a €140 million revamp, Chantilly played a worthy understudy to its bigger, grand- er neighbour during the last two years. And while that charming town so steeped in racing lore is a delight to visit, there's something rather invigorating about be- ing let loose in Paris for the weekend. A chance to combine Europe's best horserac- ing with the cultural delicacies of one of the continent's finest cities makes for the perfect fleeting treat before returning to the rigours of yearling and breeding stock sales, especially as that particular time of the year is so often blessed with mild, sunny weather. At ParisLongchamp on Arc weekend, you'll hear many more English voices than French, a mass invasion from across the Channel contributing to some 60,000 visitors for France's signature race. Away
