This addition, along with the company's acquisition of microbial technology provider Biop- olis last year, has expanded ADM's product portfolio and will allow the company to grow its research and development projects. Molecules produced from omega-3s may kill cancer CHAMPAIGN, IL—A class of molecules that form when omega-3 fatty acids are metabolized by the body may inhibit the growth and spread of cancer, according to researchers at the University of Illi- nois. These molecules, known as endocannabinoid epoxides (EDP- EAs), have anti-inflammatory proper- ties similar to cannabinoids but lack the psychotropic effects. In an animal study, researchers observed that EDP- EAs slowed the growth of tumors and blood vessels in mice with bone can- cer, essentially inhibiting the cancer cells from migrating. In higher con- centrations, EDP-EAs also killed the cancer cells, though not as effectively as other chemotherapeutic drugs. The researchers have isolated the most potent EDP-EA molecules and are working to develop derivatives that will bind better to the cannabinoid receptor. The results were published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
