Tablets & Capsules October 2018 32K nutra news ADM acquires Probiotics International CHICAGO, IL—Archer Daniels Midland (A DM), an ing redients manufacturer, has acquired Probiot- ics International, Somerset, UK, a manufacturer of probiotic supple- ments for humans, pets, and produc- tion animals. Molecules produced from omega-3s may kill cancer CHAMPAIGN, IL—A class of molecules that form when omega-3 fatty acids are metabolized by the body may inhibit the growth and spread of cancer, according to researchers at the University of Illi- nois. These molecules, known as endocannabinoid epoxides (EDP- EAs), have anti-inflammatory proper- ties similar to cannabinoids but lack the psychotropic effects. In an animal study, researchers observed that EDP- EAs slowed the growth of tumors and blood vessels in mice with bone can- cer, essentially inhibiting the cancer cells from migrating. In higher con- centrations, EDP-EAs also killed the cancer cells, though not as effectively as other chemotherapeutic drugs. The researchers have isolated the most potent EDP-EA molecules and are working to develop derivatives that will bind better to the cannabinoid receptor. The results were published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Sensient acquires Mazza MILWAUKEE, WI—Sensient Technologies, a specialty pharmaceu- tical and nutraceutical ingredient sup- plier, has acquired Mazza Innovation, Vancouver, BC, a manufacturer of botanical extraction technologies. Mazza's plant extraction technology will allow Sensient to better meet its customers' demand for pure ingredi- ents for nutraceutical and personal care products. Eurofins to use DuPont assay to identify probiotic strains MADISON, WI—Eurofins, a con- tract research organization headquar- tered in Luxembourg, will employ DuPont Nutrition & Health poly- merase-chain-reaction (PCR) geno- typing assays to identify probiotics at the strain level in both raw materials a n d f i n i s h e d p r o d u c t s . T h e strain-identifying tests are similar in cost and efficiency to current less-ac- curate test methods, enabling the industry to move toward increased product integrity and label accuracy.
