Despite the stringent conditions, U.S. beef exports to China totaled 3,020 metric tons, valued at $31 million in the second half of 2017, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. In 2018, beef exports to China have increased 15 percent to 65,345 metric tons and 43 percent in value at $510.8 million, according to a USMEF market report. There are 37 U.S. establishments approved to export beef to China. On May 22, 2018, Northern Lights Fresh Meat of Alaska was approved as a slaughter and fabricator facility. Jones' facility includes a 55,000 square-foot barn, which houses a 53-foot USDA-approved Trivan mobile slaughter facility, a self-contained cut and wrap container and small feed yard. "This way the cattle are fed and processed in the same location," says Jones. "The beef ships direct from my barn to the freightliners. Then, it is a straight shot from Alaska to China; it takes eight to 12 hours depending on the destination in China." Using an e-commerce business plan, Alaska entrepreneur Robert Jones and his wife Christy, plan to export chilled Montana beef to China once the tariffs lift.
