Restoring Str uctures with Care and Passion B Y B R E T T W I L B U R A t age 78, restoration specialist Jon Stue- floten is busier than ever. The lifelong Carmel resident has completed projects as var- ied as working on the kitchen at Crespi Hall at the 247-year-old Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, protecting the wine caves at Holman Ranch Winery, and repainting the Point Sur Lighthouse. Stuefloten and his loyal crew will do whatever it takes to ensure that projects are completed correctly. For the lighthouse project, a special ladder was created that hooked onto the top bezel of the copper roof of the lighthouse and swung the painters around 360 degrees while attached by safety harnesses. For Holman Ranch, a two- part enamel paint was used to encase the gal- vanized conduits so that chipping conduit wouldn't flake onto the grapes. For the multiple restorations of the Carmel Mission that Stuefloten has overseen, knowledge of tech- niques and historical accuracy come into play. "We approach our projects with a lifetime of experience," Stuefloten, both a painter and a con- tractor, explains. "We've perfected the traditional methods of our area's colors and textures, and are able to use those to do some beautiful work." Stuefloten and his twin brother grew up spending summers and weekends working alongside their father, who was a Hugh W. Comstock builder in the Carmel area. Stuefloten's passion now translates into award- winning project restorations, such as the White Hart Victorian in Pacific Grove. He and his long- time team also work on new projects. "We are very unique," he says. "I feel so fortu- nate to have grown up here and to have such deep-rooted connections. We complete proj- ects in a timely manner with satisfied customers."
