Marine Sanctuar y Foundation Announces New Director B Y M I C H A E L C H AT F I E L D E ncompassing 6,094 square miles of the Pacific along 276 miles of coast, creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary was mandated by Congressional legislation pro- posed by then-Representative Leon Panetta in 1992. The Sanctuary ensures federal protection for the incredible diversity of marine life that resides around California's shore. "Our communities appreciate the impor- tance of the sanctuary to the health of the ocean and local economies," said Panetta, board co-chair for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. The mission of that Foundation, the local chapter of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, is "to inspire the public to protect the Sanctuary through public outreach and reducing wildlife disturbance, specifically focus- ing on whale rescue efforts." In October, the Foundation seated new Director Ginaia (Jin AY ah) Kelly of Davenport. "I am thrilled to be involved with this Foundation. It's the perfect combination of local, grass-roots, community-based effor ts," Kelly says. "I couldn't be prouder and more excited to be a part of this effort." A former competitive surfer and professional high-diver, Kelly brings more than 16 years of experience with nonprofit organizations includ- ing Save Our Shores, Santa Cruz County American Bar Association and the Red Cross.
