It's so ver y peaceful where we live, with
gentle valleys.
"And I think the feeling we have here,
with all the family around, is import-
ant for the horses' mentality too. If the
place is calm, and we are calm, then
they are good in their minds. Trainers
often tell us they like to take horses
raised at Montaigu because they are
easy to handle. So there's not much I
would want to change. But if a home-
bred Derby winner will always remain
a proud achievement, it can't be the
end of our search. Our goal must be
to remain at the top; to keep breeding
horses that will be appreciated, at the
sales, by owners who want to win big
races. Why not an Arc one day?"
And so the family will keep working
on the genetic palette, just as Gibson's
forefathers did with aromas.
"Of course breeding is not an exact
science," she says. "To breed racehors-
es is to live ever y day with dreams. And
we know that those dreams will some-
times come true."
