prepared, both in body and spirit, we set off
to hike the Grand Canyon.
We chose the South Kaibab Trail, which
boasts of an elevation of 7,260 feet and is
officially described thusly: "Maintained dirt
trail. Steep. Well defined. Very little shade
on trail, mostly from canyon walls and de-
pendent on time of day. Give uphill hikers the
right of way."
As we began gleefully heading down the
path, we soon realized how important that
last bit of information was. Everyone coming
back up looked as if, well, they were hiking
their way out of the Grand Canyon. For polite-
ness and for safety, they got the right of way.
The South Kaibab Trail has three natural
stopping places along the way: Ooh Aah Point
